How Do Braces Work?

A boy with yellow hoodie smiling with braces. If you haven’t been happy with your mouth for a while, you’re not the only one. There are a lot of people who aren’t happy with their mouths as teenagers or as adults. Perhaps you have crooked teeth, or your teeth aren’t spaced correctly. If you are thinking about looking into braces for your teeth, you might want to know how they work. All About Orthodontics® can help. Let us take a little time to talk to you about braces and how they work.

Why Braces?

Many adults had straighter teeth when they were children than they do now. Over time, your mouth changes, and so does your bite. Adult’s mouths can shift and change over time. They could also experience bone loss, bruxism, accidents, or injuries - such as a blow to the face - that can make a bite worse than it was when you were a kid. Also, some adults did not get good orthodontic care for their mouths when they were younger. If you didn’t get proper care when you were younger, you need to know that it is not too late. In fact, you can take care of orthodontic problems in your mouth at any age. One way to correct bite and spacing problems in your mouth is through braces.

How Do Braces Fix Your Teeth?

Braces have been around for centuries. They are usually made of metal, ceramic, or plastic brackets with metal wires that thread between the brackets. We cement the brackets to your teeth with dental cement. The wires are tightened over time so that your teeth become straighter and more adequately spaced. Braces can also correct issues with your bite. Before we can fit you with braces, we need to make impressions of your teeth, take pictures, or use x-rays to figure out a treatment plan for you. Then we will put braces on your teeth. Usually, with braces, you’ll come to see us once a month or every other month, and we will tighten the wires on your braces according to our treatment plan. Because the movement of your teeth happens gradually, it is much less painful. In fact, most people only feel minor discomfort when they get their braces tightened, and they don’t notice they’re wearing them the rest of the time.

What Can Braces Do for Me?

You may have bottom teeth that are too crowded, and it is causing you problems when you have to clean your lower teeth. We would take pictures of your bottom teeth, and make a 3D model; then we would plan how to space out your lower teeth more evenly. We would put on brackets and wires on your lower teeth to move them apart gradually. If you only have problems with your lower teeth, we might be able to fix those with lingual braces, which means the braces could go behind your teeth instead of in front of them.

While braces don’t promise an immediate fix, they are effective at fixing your teeth over time. Braces can help with nearly all adult orthodontic problems. In the long run, they are a good investment because they can respace your teeth, straighten out your teeth, and make your teeth look amazing. Braces can also work to preserve your teeth and gums better over time. They’ll make your teeth easier to brush and care for.
